No one's too old for Facebook : Study

Social networking groups are no more an exclusive domain of teenagers or youngsters as it was a few years back. It is now catering to all those who are older but are young at heart.

The phenomenal growth of Facebook, Twitter and other social networking sites in the past year has come in part because of a surge in adoption by older members, with a national poll released on Friday providing a surprising new measure for how fast baby boomers and seniors are adopting online social networks to bridge generation gaps and geography.

A new study from the Pew Internet and American Life Project says the number of social networking users aged 50 and older nearly doubled in the past year, continuing a trend of

strong growth that was first spotted last year.

In fact, for adults between 50 and 64 years, the use of social networking sites have jumped by 88 per cent in the past year, the study found. For those aged 65 and older, it has doubled.

The younger generation, however, still remains the biggest users of Facebook and other sites.

But the report shows that seniors currently make up the fastest-growing group.

"It's surprising to see just how fast they are growing," said Mary Madden, senior research specialist and author of Pew's study.

The Pew Centre points to several factors that contribute to why Facebook is no more for kids anymore.

Using Facebook to find old friends and colleagues isn't unique to any one demographic, but Pew says roughly seven out of ten people have used social networks for this purpose.

Roughly half of adults aged 50 and over have been contacted by someone from their past through a social network.

As people retire or change careers, social networks can be a way to stay in touch or get support.

Pew notes that Internet users with chronic diseases are more likely to blog or participate in online discussions, and older folks are more likely to have these diseases.

Put those two factors together, and you've got a strong argument for social networking as a way to find communities of people with similar experiences.

Pew says older folks may use social networks to connect with their progeny, despite results that "can sometimes be messy".

The group doesn't provide hard data to support this claim, but it should seem like common sense to anyone whose parents use Facebook.

Pew doesn't mention the prevalence of social games such as Farmville as a reason Facebook attracts older users, but it seems obvious when you look at the demographics of players.

Rutherford - Simple Genius

Gujarat Science City celebrates the birth anniversary of this great scientist
for inspiration and encouragement

30th August is the birth day of Sir Ernest Rutherford, one of the most illustrious scientists of all time, who discovered and demonstrated the structure of atom.

Ernest Rutherford was one of the founding geniuses of nuclear physics. Although less well known today, Rutherford was as famous in his lifetime for his pioneering work on atomic and particle physics. He and his students performed the experiments which resulted in the discovery of the nucleus and structure of the atom, and he counted Niels Bohr as one of his students.

Earnest Rutherford is to the atom what Darwin is to evolution, Newton to mechanics, Faraday to electricity and Einstein to relativity. His pathway from rural child to immortality is a fascinating one.

To celebrate this great scientist birthday, Gujarat Science City (GSC), working under the aegis of the Department of Science & Technology, Government of Gujarat is organizing a special programme on 30th August 2010 (Monday) on the theme of “From Atom to Nano Particle: Chemistry in the Community”.

GSC has initiating the celebration of such great scientists birth anniversaries to educate the students not only in the key ideas of the scientific field but also on the people who brought these great ideas and discoveries into the world. The celebration aims to regards and respects to this great scientists as well as to encourage new generation to follow their examples of courage, determination, honesty and willingness to great work.

The programme includes a seminar on the theme, interactive session, screening of films and presentations and guided tour to the theme pavilions in Science City.

Born on the remote New Zealand frontier, Ernest's brilliance showed early, and scholarships led him to study with J. J. Thomson at the Cavendish Laboratory at Cambridge University. He changed his focus from electromagnetism to the more mysterious field of radioactivity and, through a combination of brilliant insight and indefatigable effort, made fundamental discoveries that earned him a Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1908 and a powerful influence over nuclear physics until his death in 1937.

School and college students, science educators and communicators, and other interested members are requested to attend the programme and to explore more on this legendary scientist whose work showed the way for future curious characters in science.

Casa

Jewel of the Desert

Located in a lush oasis overlooking the Atlas Mountains, Villa Kadiri, the spectacular mansion in Palmeraie, Marrakesh is the creation of Priti Paul, director of the Rs 4,500-crore Apeejay Surrendra Group, and suave Moroccan billionaire Jaouad Kadiri, the owner of JK Hotels. Sprawling across 30,000 square feet, the terracotta mansion (following the diktat of the late King Hassan that all buildings in Marrakesh must be either pink or ochre) was built in typical Marrakeshi style by American architect Stuart Church.

watch out ...........

This timeless timepiece has seen many transformations. From a sophisticated 1920’s wristwatch to a chunky metal-facedpiece – the watch has stood the test of time (no pun intended). Not only does this accessory have a functional purpose but it’s also a style statement. Now the statement is bling.
