Commonwealth Express in Gandhinagar during 14th & 15th September 2010






















The story of Indian Information Technology is now on rails! Six coaches of the Commonwealth Express train now traversing the country are devoted to telling the success story of IT in India. Five other coaches provide a curtain raiser for the upcoming Commonwealth Games.

Gandhinagar Railway Station is all set to give a warm welcome to Commonwealth Express on 14th September 2010 and the arrangement of a large number of school and college students and public have been organized to explore the essence of IT and sports to enjoy the upcoming commonwealth games at New Delhi in next month. The programme is being coordinated by the Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of Gujarat through Gujarat Informatics Limited (GIL), Science City, GUJCOST, Commissioner of Schools and Western Railways.

The Commonwealth Express (CW Express) is a special exhibition train designed to promote the mega event that will take place in Delhi will be in the Gandhinagar railway station, the capital city of Gujarat during 14th and 15th September 2010.

Flagged off from New Delhi on June 24, the CW Express will be on the track of different cities in the country and will back to its destination point on October 2. The CWG Express is a joint project between the Information Technology and Railway ministries. The exhibition on the wheel is traveling to each state and will stop at fifty select stations across the country.

The train contains five of the 14 coaches have rare games memorabilia and six others are devoted to information technology. The exhibition on wheels tracks the strides made in areas of sports, infrastructure and technology, relevant to rural India. One of the coaches will display the sport events scheduled at the forthcoming Commonwealth Games, as also the stadia where each of the events will be held.

Speaking on the occasion, Shri Ravi Saxena, Additional Chief Secretary, Government of Gujarat who is also heading state’s IT department along with Department of Science & Technology (DST), expressed that “The Commonwealth Express is about bridging the knowledge gap. This exhibition on wheel focuses on exhibition of information and communication technology in different fields, on ICT services and its influence on normal human life. The exhibition showcases the success of information technology in different fields, its importance in different events, e-governance plan, efforts behind maintenance and its multimedia usages.”

The coaches from 6 to 11 depicts all about different facets of Information and Communication technology (ICT), each of them dealing with a particular facet. The first coach presents an overview of ICT, how it has impacted the life of common man. An interesting aspect in the sixth coach is the story of communication over the years — from smoke signals to SMS and e-mails.

The second coach displays the cohesion of efforts taken by the Department of Information Technology and several other organizations in the sphere of ICT, their contributions towards bringing ICT to the common man and efforts to build IT Superpower. National e-Governance Plan, a major initiative towards the concept of good governance, is the focal point.

The third coach is about the impact of ICT in social, health, education, agriculture and ecology while the fourth coach presents ICT from the perspective of industries. The fifth coach revolves around Common Service Centre, an initiative to provide a platform to the people to access various information and services as well as interface between the Government and citizens.

The contribution of Indian Railways' to the sports and a list of railway sports persons who have won Arjuna awards, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna awards, Dronacharya award, Padmashree and Dhyanchand awards have been displayed in a separate coach in the train.

Similarly, the pictures of outstanding sports personalities of the country have been depicted in all around the coaches. The remaining coaches have the displays on milestones from information technology. These coaches will narrate the story of IT and communication, and how it affects the lives of the common man, especially in rural areas.

The entry to the train is free. Enthusiasts can see the displays between 10 am to 8 pm on 14th and 15th September 2010.
