Priyanka, Rahul Gandhi to walk ramp?

In a first for the fashion industry, Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi are said to be walking the ramp as showstoppers for the Kolkata Fashion Week finale. The fashion week has also been rechristened as the India Fashion Carnival. The organisers of the show called in a press conference on Tuesday, but refused to name the high-profile VVIPs as the event’s showstoppers.

“Disclosing the names of Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi’s as the stars of the finale will jeopardise the NSG’s plans to guard the Gandhis,” says a source from the Fashion Week.

The Gandhis have decided to walk the ramp this time because the IFC is paying tribute to Mahatma Gandhi by displaying khadi outfits at the finale.
Designers Riyaz Gangji and Soumitro Mandal are two who will showcase their khadi creations. Gangji, says, “It’s a great honour for me to be doing a show that is dedicated to the father of the nation. I feel all designers should come forward and do more such shows and help khadi weavers.”

Soumitro Mandal, another designer says, “I’ve always been in the forefront of the khadi movement. This is also my first fashion week finale, and I’m really excited about it.” Both Gangji and Mandal said they had no idea about the Gandhis walking the ramp.

Special guest
The third unnamed showstopper for the evening is the Minister of State for IT and Communication, Sachin Pilot. “Riyaz Gangji is entrusted with designing outfits for Rahul Gandhi and Sachin Pilot. Priyanka Gandhi will sport a khadi sari that is designed by Saumitro Mandal,” adds the source.

Bollywood music directors Sajid-Wajid, who are creating a new version of Vande Mataram for the finale, will arrange the background score for the event.

Says organiser Pratik Agarwal, “I know there’s a lot of speculation about the finale showstoppers. Some have even named Pranab Mukherjee in specualtion. Let’s see how creative the press gets.”
